1300 - 1526: Late Medieval Period
- 1300-1526: Delhi Sultanate:
- Tughlaq Dynasty (1320-1413): Known for ambitious but failed projects, such as the transfer of the capital from Delhi to Daulatabad.
- Sayyid Dynasty (1414-1451): Established after the decline of the Tughlaq dynasty.
- Lodi Dynasty (1451-1526): The last dynasty of the Delhi Sultanate. Ibrahim Lodi was defeated by Babur in the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, leading to the establishment of the Mughal Empire.
1526 - 1707: Mughal Empire
- 1526: Babur establishes the Mughal Empire after defeating Ibrahim Lodi at the First Battle of Panipat.
-1556-1605: Akbar's reign, known for extensive territorial expansion and consolidation of the empire, as well as cultural and administrative innovations.
- 1605-1627: Jahangir's reign, marked by relative peace and the flourishing of the arts.
- 1628-1658: Shah Jahan's reign, famous for architectural achievements such as the Taj Mahal.
- 1658-1707: Aurangzeb's reign, characterized by military expansion and the imposition of stricter Islamic laws. His death marks the beginning of the decline of the Mughal Empire.
1707 - 1857: Regional Powers and British East India Company
The East India Company was an English company formed for the exploitation of trade with East and Southeast Asia and India.Incorporated by royal charter on December 31,1600, it was started as a monopolistic trading body so that England could participate in the East Indian spice trade.
It also traded cotton, silk, indigo, saltpeter, and tea and transported slaves. It became involved in politics and acted as an agent of British imperialism in India from the early 18th century to the mid-19th century. From the late 18th century it gradually lost both commercial and political control. In 1873 it ceased to exist as a legal entity.
- 1707: Death of Aurangzeb; the Mughal Empire begins to decline.
- 1739: Nadir Shah of Persia invades India, sacking Delhi and weakening the Mughal Empire.
- 1757: Battle of Plassey; British East India Company defeats the Nawab of Bengal, marking the start of British colonial dominance in India.
- 1764: Battle of Buxar; British East India Company secures control over Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa.
- 1799: Tipu Sultan of Mysore is defeated by the British in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War.
- 1818: The Maratha Empire is defeated in the Third Anglo-Maratha War, leading to British control over most of India
1857 - 1947: British Raj and Indian Independence Movement
- 1857: Indian Rebellion (First War of Independence);
widespread but ultimately unsuccessful revolt against the British East India Company's rule.
